They are the Brown banded cockroach, German cockroach, and American cockroach. These cockroaches often lurk around kitchen, pantry and canteen where there are vast decaying matter, food scrapes, grease and water. Because of their likes in damp and moist conditions, they are often seen near sinks, grease traps and even in washrooms.

While it may feel unsettling, finding cockroaches in your room is unfortunately quite common. These pests thrive in warm, humid climates and are nocturnal scavengers drawn to moisture, food crumbs, and sheltered hiding spots in dark corners. They don’t build nests in the way ants do, but instead hide in cracks, behind furniture, or under appliances.

Seeing one cockroach at night isn’t unusual, but spotting them during the day can be a sign of a larger infestation, as it often means their usual hiding spots are overcrowded. To reduce the chances of seeing them, keep food sealed, clean up spills promptly, lower indoor humidity, and seal up small gaps or openings where they could enter. These steps can make your room less inviting to cockroaches.

What is a Cockroach's Diet

Cockroaches are highly adaptable omnivorous scavengers, capable of eating a wide variety of organic materials. Their diet can include crumbs, grease, spilled food, cardboard, glue, soap, and even dead skin or other insects. This flexibility allows them to survive in almost any environment where food residues or organic matter are present.

They owe much of this adaptability to symbiotic bacteria in their gut, which help them extract essential nutrients, such as amino acids and vitamins, even from poor-quality food sources. Some species can also digest cellulose and other tough materials with the help of these microbes or by producing their own digestive enzymes.

How Long Can Cockroaches Survive Without Food?

Cockroaches are cold-blooded and have slow metabolic rates, allowing them to endure long periods without eating. Most species can live for about a month without food, while some can last even longer if they have access to water. In fact, water is far more critical to their survival than food. Without water, many species will only survive for about a week.

Cockroach Infestation Indicators

Recognising the signs of a cockroach infestation early can help you take swift action. Below are two key indicators to watch out for:

Faecal Signs

  • Speckled droppings: Look for small, dark flecks or pellets, often found along baseboards, in kitchen cupboards, and behind appliances.
  • Smear marks: In areas with water or moisture, droppings may appear smudged or streaked, especially along walls or surfaces.
  • Unpleasant odour: A musty, oily scent, often noticeable in closed spaces, can signal a significant infestation, even if droppings aren't obvious.

Egg Cases (Oothecae)

  • Distinct capsule shapes: Cockroach egg cases are typically oval or oblong, often reddish-brown or dark brown, and about a centimeter long.
  • Location matters: You’ll often find them tucked away in tight, hidden spots, like behind appliances, under sinks, in cracks, or inside cabinetry.
  • High reproduction sign: Even a few egg cases can indicate an accelerating infestation, given how rapidly roaches reproduce.
